LIVINGSTON, La (BRPROUD) – The hum of robots moving across the floor filled the Grady Hornsby Gym at Denham Springs High school on Saturday, Oct. 9.
Infinite Recharge was the name of the competition this year and students from Louisiana, Mississippi and Oklahoma raced robots and participated in a tournament. Teams from the different schools were put into an “alliance”. Denham Spring had two robotic teams, one was part of the first alliance and the other was part of the second alliance.
“These competitions allow the students to realize the practical application of their work,” Daniel Eiland, Denham Springs High School STEM Instructor said. “The students construct these robots, they program them for commands, and then they remotely operate their moves.
This is the first competition held in person in two years due to the pandemic, the 2021 competition occurred virtually.
“Offering this opportunity to these team members is not just about competition but about continuing the hope that things are getting back to normal where one day soon we will all be competing together in official competitions,” Eiland said.
This year’s tournament requires students and their robots to race across the gym floor and gather yellow balls or “power cells” and project them toward small portals at either end of the constructed field. The teams scored when their “power cells,” went through the“power ports” which are small holes. With 30 seconds remaining in the competition, students attempted to maneuver their robots to the center of the field to climb a “shield generator,” which was a metal rack. Students could park underneath it for extra points.
The winners of this year’s competition were Team Fusion from Gulfport High School in Gulfport, Miss., Team Prometheus from Mandeville High School in Mandeville, La., and Denham Venom #2 from Denham Springs High School.
The Denham Venom #1 team was part of the second alliance and became a runner-up in the competition. Denham Venom #1 competed against t their classmates in Denham Venom #2 in the final match. Eiland was the coach for the Denham Venom team.
