SALEM, N.H. – In 2020, the FIRST robotics season was cut short due to the pandemic.
There was no in-person season in 2021. So, when Gael Force, from Clinton High School, and Nashoba Robotics showed up at their first competition of the year, the New England District Granite State event March 4 to 6, and were ready to go.
And both went into the medal rounds after qualifying rounds.
Clinton was fifth going into the medal matches and ended up being captains of the fourth-ranked alliance. For team members, they chose Airstrike from Newport, R.I., and Osran from Hopkinton, N.H.
Nashoba went into the playoffs in 15th place out of 39 teams, and they were drafted in the fifth alliance.
That meant the local rivals would compete for a spot in the semi finals. Both proved they were able to handle scoring – called delivering cargo – and both were able to hang after the matches for extra points.
Nashoba’s alliance came out on top, before losing to the eventual meet winners.
But Gael Force did not go home empty handed. The team received the judges’ award for its community service and efforts to promote FIRST.
Gael Force will next compete at WPI, April 8 to 10.
Nashoba will compete at the Central Mass. in Shrewsbury March 25 to 27.
Assabet has team 157, called the Aztecs. They will compete at the Pine Tree competition in Waterville, Maine, March 11 to 13, then Central Mass. in Shrewsbury March 25 to 27.
