The global fintech founder community is dominated by men, but that isn’t stopping this female founded and led tech company. Meet Nicky Senyard, the CEO of Fintel Connect, a marketing analytics company built specifically for the financial services space.
Fintel Connect recognizes the pressures that brands and publishers face in growing online while staying compliant in highly regulated financial fields. They are committed to making performance marketing safe and accessible for businesses in the space.
Fintel Connect positions itself to help both parties – the brand and the publisher – facilitate growth for their businesses.
Running a business in a male-dominated field can sometimes be tricky, but Senyard feels fortunate as she feels equal in this space. Her approach is authentic, and when faced with adversity, she realizes that this is their problem, not hers.
Fintel Connect’s team is over 80% women and has been recognized globally by leading accelerators and venture capital firms in the fintech space.
Advice that Senyard leaves with other business owners are:
1. Leverage your current relationships, expertise, and talents
Grow your business from where you currently have contacts and relationships and use those contacts for referrals. Senyard calls this her “pebble in the pond theory,” where contacting your close relationships will give you a ripple effect and reach further than if you tried to do it alone.
2. Stay laser beam focussed
Keep on top of mind your three most important aspects of business: starting with revenue, creating profitability for growth, and remember that it costs you more to service than it is decreasing your profit margins.
3. People are the fuel to the rocket
Hiring the right people and investing in them is essential. Don’t try to fit a square peg in a round hole, as it will do a disservice for you and that team member. Hiring right takes patience and time. Be transparent about job descriptions, goals and objectives, and performance appraisals when you onboard new team members. These actions will result in more focussed and engaged employees.
4. Values of business
Know your values as a founder. Are you a disruptor or a thought leader? Senyard identifies as a thought leader and values new ideas and problems to solve.
The bottom line is that although running a business can be challenging and at times overwhelming, the best thing you can do for your business and yourself is to find joy in business. Remember where the fun is in your business and focus on that. That’s where you will find your energy and passion, and it will keep you going, especially on the more challenging days. If it feels like work all the time and hard work, it won’t offer you a good quality of life and will be challenging to sustain. You can find much joy in running a business so focus on what brings you happiness.
