As summer starts and the weather makes more of us want to spend some more time outdoors, experts have compiled a list of fun activities that are great calorie burning exercise as well.
A spokesperson for Ubuy, who compiled the list, told us:
“Summer is an amazing time for getting active. With more time spent outdoors, the potential for making ‘active’ more fun is significant. We’ve worked with personal trainer, Melanie Gilder, to come up with a list of activities that are actually enjoyable for all fitness levels because exercise is much more sustainable if we enjoy it! We all learned a lot from this one and I’m sure many of our team will be getting outdoors to try a new activity this summer.”
Skateboarding
It might not be an activity you’d associate with adults! But 1 in 8 adults skateboards. It’s incredibly fun regardless of your fitness or skill level and there are skate parks up and down the country. Melanie says:
“The typical calorie burn for skateboarding is between 400 and 800 calories per hour. That’s significant. It can be a sociable activity too but more importantly is fun. People stick with exercise when it’s enjoyable and this can be thoroughly so. It’s also an excellent way to improve your balance and core strength.
Rollerblading
1 in 5 of us has rollerbladed as an adult. This is a winning activity for fun and thrills, but in addition, Melanie tells us, it burns calories and helps build strength in the glutes and legs.
“Your glute strength contributes healthy hips, knees and lower back. Rollerblading really does help with building glute strength, helps with building lower leg strength and improving balance. It works your abdominal muscles and also burns calories at a rate of around 400 to 800 calories an hour.”
So this might be one to try this summer!
Paddleboarding
You don’t have to own a paddleboard to go paddleboarding. Lots of places hire them out. And this is one that is incredibly fun and versatile for all ability levels.
Melanie tells us:
“You can start by kneeling on a paddleboard if you’re not comfortable standing yet, and just build up over time. But ultimately paddleboarding is a great summer active sport. It helps with calorie burning for sure. Depending on you and how you paddleboard you could burn between 300 and 450 calories per hour. But it’s also an amazing way to improve your balance.”
Kayaking
If paddleboarding feels a little unsturdy, you might prefer kayaking. Melanie is a big advocate:
“Expect to burn around 250 to 350 calories an hour kayaking. It doesn’t require the same balance as paddleboarding but it is a great workout and is really enjoyable on a good weather day.”
Walking or Hiking
Not just a summer activity, but for many, hiking in warm weather is more pleasant than hiking in winter temperatures. If you’re new to it, then summer can be a great time to get started providing it isn’t too hot!
Melanie advises:
“Walking or hiking is perhaps the easiest activity to build into our every day routine. Walking to the bus stop, parking further from the shops and walking – all of these things add to our daily calorie burn. But when walking becomes a hobby this is really great. You can expect to burn a couple of hundred calories an hour on flat walks. But if you start to tackle hills then up to 500 calories an hour is realistic.
You can easily adapt where you walk to suit your fitness levels and build up over time.”
Happy Active Adventures
Summer is a great time to get outside and active and learn to love new hobbies and sports you might never have tried before. So wherever your summer adventures take you, enjoy!
