PLEASANTON, CA — The future has arrived.
Soon, many Pleasanton residents will have their groceries delivered by autonomous robots, thanks to a partnership between the city, Starship Technologies, and the flagship Lucky California store in Pleasanton. The new service launched last Wednesday.
The robots can carry up to 20 pounds of groceries, or the equivalent of about three shopping bags, according to a Starship news release. The robots can also travel autonomously, including crossing streets, climbing curbs, and cruising through sidewalks as they make their deliveries.
Customers can browse the Starship app and select thousands of groceries from Lucky California. Once the order is placed, Lucky California staff gather the items, and place them inside a freshly-sanitized robot. Customers can track the robot’s journey through the Starship app.

“We are very pleased to bring the benefits of autonomous delivery to Pleasanton, in partnership with Lucky California,” Ryan Tuohy, senior vice president of Sales and Business Development at Starship Technologies, said in a statement last week. “Since launching our service in Modesto in 2020, we’ve been excited to see the extremely positive reaction to the robots and how they were embraced as part of the local community. We think the residents of Pleasanton will appreciate the convenience and positive environmental impact of autonomous delivery and we fully expect the service area to quickly expand to more households.”
The company first partnered with Save Mart Companies in September 2020, and since then, robots have delivered food from the Save Mart flagship store in Modesto to over 55,000 households. It also offers services around the US, Europe, and the UK.
