As the summer sales season gets underway in a difficult economic climate, the appeal of second-hand online retailers has never been greater. Discount coupons to make shopping on these platforms more convenient are also gaining their popularity.
Platforms that are transforming the image of second-hand goods
July marks the start of the summer sales season: for more or less eight weeks, retailers will be able to offer discounts, giving consumers the opportunity to revamp their wardrobes or treat themselves to certain products at a lower cost. The summer sales kick off against a backdrop of economic crisis, rising inflation and punctured wallets: if retailers want the period to make up for a difficult year, future buyers could turn to e-commerce, and in particular second-hand platforms.
eBay, Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp… Online platforms for selling second-hand products have enjoyed great popularity in recent years, particularly among younger consumers, who see them as a way of reconciling savings with ecological concerns.
In a survey conducted by a discount platform Promocodius, 79% of US consumers from Generation Z (under 25) are willing to seek out and buy sustainable products. According to Alisa Sklyarova, project manager at PromoCodius, “Behavior has changed: the days of rushing to the store at the start of the sales are almost over! The consumers are moving towards more reasoned and virtuous online purchasing using promo codes and best deals, and brands have adapted to this new era of commerce, offering a more responsible, connected and agile retail experience and discounts”.
eBay is the most popular website for second-hand shopping in the U.S.
With over 180 million active users, eBay is one of the world’s largest marketplaces and the most popular in the US. The e-commerce platform is accessible to both professional and private sellers. On eBay, you can find all kinds of items: smartphones, computers, games consoles, TVs, motorcycle parts, tools, garden items, toys, antiques, books, electric scooters and more.
In addition to reduced prices on many items, customers can get an extra discount with an eBay discount code. According to the survey conducted by PromoCodius, more than two-thirds of U.S. platform’s users said they had bought used products on eBay by using a promo code.
Seems like the image of second-hand is changing: it’s no longer shameful, it’s actually valued. From thrift stores to reconditioned goods, economic and ecological concerns coexist in the minds of consumers. A threat to traditional sales?
