SAGINAW, MI – Essexville-Hampton Public School’s junior high robotics team won a lottery to have their robot perform the puck drop at this weekend’s Saginaw Spirit hockey game, according to a post on the district’s Facebook page.
The “Robotics Night” is sponsored by Hemlock Semiconductor. High school, middle school and Jr. teams are selling tickets to the game in order to fundraise and compete for hundreds in prizes for their programs.
The Spirit will take on the Kitchener Rangers at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14 at the Dow Event Center, located at 303 Johnson St, in Saginaw.
Though the Cramer Junior High School team is excited to go to the game, their main focus has been on competitions, said Ethan Shannon, the team mentor for the district’s robotics programs.
The team had its first-ever competition at a tournament held at Bullock Creek Middle School Saturday, Nov. 6, and has another event in Novi planned for the day before the Spirit game. They have an intense schedule after losing a year to the COVID-19 pandemic and want to make their hard work count, he said.
“Our kids have worked really really hard, they’ve learned a whole bunch,” Shannon said. “They’re excited to be a part of it right now.”
Following up back-to-back weekend competitions with Robotics Night is a lot of robots for an eight-day period, but the kids love the program and parents often have to ask when their kids are coming home from practice, Shannon said.
“It’s hard to get kids to leave our lab because they like what they’re doing here,” Shannon said. “We kind of see the whole thing as a reward.”
