The Importance of Trust in Relationships: A Few Words About ClarityCheck
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

I thought I knew my boyfriend Lucas backward and forwards. After two years of living together in a cozy apartment, and dinners at the same table, everything was perfect. We dreamed, talked about the future, and small talk. I sometimes thought we were able to read each other’s minds. However, all of that changed in one little moment.

That One Day

A very ordinary Saturday afternoon kicked it off. So Lucas and I made a pact to do a general cleaning – get rid of the old junk that’s been collecting dust in the closets for years. My creaky old welcome wagon and, we worked side by side, we laughed, at photos, old photos, and sad found things.

And then I came across a box of cards and letters:

– What is this? – I pulled out one of the postcards and asked.

– Oh, just old stuff from the past. You can throw it away.

However, one postcard — a sticker — just struck my eye. It had a beach, a bright blue sea, and a strange caption: “Don’t forget your promise. Take care of yourself.”

– What kind of promise? – I smiled, showing the card.

Lucas quickly changed the subject and said:

– It doesn’t mean anything.

But his reaction seemed off to me, but I didn’t push. Isn’t everyone entitled to their past?

The First Alarming Notes

The next day, I noticed that Lucas was spending more time with his phone. He checked it every five minutes, always with the screen facing down, and even carried it into the bathroom with him. That’s never happened before.

– Are you in love with your phone? – I joked.

– It’s just a lot of work – he replied succinctly.

I did my best to tell myself that everything was normal, that it was just me being jealous. And with each passing second, that feeling in my chest grew uneasy that something was off. One time I overheard Lucas on the phone nervously talking to someone about something. His face was concerned, but his conversation was short.

– Who was that? – I asked.

– Work stuff – he said it was okay and proceeded to go into his bedroom, leaving me alone.

Coincidence or Signal?

Something happened a couple of days later, and that became this story’s starting point. I asked Lucas for his phone to look up a recipe for a new dish that we were having dinner together, and I looked up a recipe. He handed it to me without a second thought, but immediately a notification came through: a text from an unfamiliar number: “When are you going to finish what you started?”

I looked up at Lucas. He was visibly tense.

– What is it? – I asked, trying to speak calmly.

– Probably a mistake – he answered too quickly and tried to change the subject.

But I couldn’t calm down. The next day I was going to beat it. It wasn’t that I wanted to be the person who forced my way into my partner’s personal space, but my anxiety had gotten out of hand. I remembered ClarityCheck which allows you to see who a given phone number is connected to. I entered the number from the message and just froze. Her name was Amelia and it was her number. I had intended to address him first but thought better of it, and decided not to.

Amelia’s Mystery

The next time Lucas was late for work, I used the service again. Then, with the help of a good friend, I found out that Amelia used to work for an agency specializing in investigations. I started digging through my memories and suddenly I remembered the postcard. The beach, the promise. What if it had something to do with her? When Lucas came home, I asked:

– How’s it going at work? Many orders?

– Yeah, the usual – he said evasively.

There was something in his voice that made me more determined.

The Truth That Came Out

One night when Lucas was asleep, I wanted to look at his laptop. Yes, it was wrong, but I had to know the truth. I found correspondence with Amelia in the mail. It wasn’t that simple: She really was his half-sister. I found out that Amelia was paying off huge debts that their father had left. Lucas had some property there in his name and she wrote to him that he needed to get involved too.

She also said that her father was hiding his past from them and not only his debts. Maybe he was in on some kind of fraud. Amelia was looking for evidence to protect herself and Lucas. When I told Lucas I knew everything he was first angry. But then he confessed he was trying to keep me out of trouble.

The Finale

We met Amelia and we decided to act together. It was a difficult period but it was also as close as we have ever been. A random message can sometimes break trust and sometimes open your eyes to something you didn’t know about.
