VPS Hosting Vs. Dedicated Servers

When you’re an owner of a particular brand or service, it is highly likely you’ll create a website that will serve as an advertisement for everything that you provide. If done the right way, as time goes by, this site is supposed to attract lots of new visitors.

If that happens, you should think of the next step. Maybe consider having a brand-new hosting plan? If that’s precisely your idea, then you are probably wondering if you should opt for dedicated servers or VPS which stands for a virtual private server.

Both of these options are great but bear in mind that each of them is different in its own way. Today we will show you some crucial differences between these two that will help you make the best decision.

Managed vs. Unmanaged VPS hosting -What are the Differences?

Everything You Need To Know About VPS & Dedicated Servers

What Does VPS Hosting Represent?

It can be defined as your own private department of a certain physical server and that part of the server’s resources is intended just for you. You will have root access, as well as the chance to utilize all features that otherwise aren’t provided on a standard shared and reseller hosting plans.

This just goes to show that you’ll be able to do a lot more custom configuration in comparison to a typical shared hosting plan. Still, bear in mind that you won’t have every single resource of the entire physical service to yourself.

What does it mean? It means that VPS isn’t as loaded with resources and as customizable as a dedicated server. So what’s so good about it? One of its best traits revolves around the price. Midrange VPS is around $120 each month, however, if you’re lucky enough to come across a promo deal, you can get it for less.

All in all, with it you will receive root access, as well as customizability without the cost of a dedicated server. This makes it a perfect place where you can test out some interesting designs and themes, and at the same time to express your creativity by creating websites before you move them to a reseller, shared, or dedicated server.

What About Dedicated Server?

This story with this one is a little bit different. In this case, you will get the whole physical server dedicated to your web page(s). Unlike with VPS, here, you’ll be receiving practically the whole thing, not just a single part of the server.

Furthermore, you’re not only receiving more resources, but you will also have total control over the physical hardware that’s inside of your server, as well as the program that is running on it. More importantly, you will have control over every piece of software on that particular hardware.

Having a dedicated server is like purchasing a brand-new house, all for yourself, meaning that you are going to be the only person who owns the entire building. It’s all yours. This means that you will have the power to customize it as much as you want.

What Are The Main Differences Between These Two?

There’s actually one main difference between that’s worth mentioning and it revolves around the hardware that is being utilized. Both of them can provide high-end and low-end servers and can work very efficiently.

Besides, both of these types of services are packed with automatic malware removal and scanning, as well as with yearly security audits and many other things. Nowadays, you can easily come across a web hosting company that offers either VPS hosting or dedicated servers, and at times both.

When it comes to packages that were mentioned above, they normally involve certain services free of charge, while there are those that will require some cash.

It all depends on the type of hosting company you’re choosing. As far as the cost is concerned, as it was previously stated, VPS is generally quite affordable and cheaper in comparison to the other one.

This means that even the worst dedicated server is going to be more expensive than the best VPS. Of course, all of this highly depends on your needs. For instance, if you decide to opt for the best-dedicated hosting plan, you can expect to pay thousands of dollars every single month. Bear in mind that this refers to websites that have millions of visitors per month.

Security

In terms of security, many experts suggest that dedicated servers are safer than VPS. Why is that? Well, it’s because VPS hosting comes with a certain weakness that cannot be found in a dedicated server and it’s called the hypervisor.

What’s its role? Namely, it deals with making and managing all virtual machines on the server. A majority of viruses only impact a single virtual machine, however, at times, although quite rare, they may be so omnipotent that they are capable of bypassing the hypervisor completely and spreading to every single account on the server.

Since we stated that it’s not something that occurs frequently, you do not have to be too worried about it, however, if you’re overly cautious and you want to make sure that everything is one hundred percent secured, then having a dedicated server should definitely be your choice.

Performance

This highly depends on the server’s hardware specifications. Now, what does it mean? For example, if you have two servers that have specifications that are exactly the same, a dedicated server will practically always provide you with a better performance when compared with VPS hosting.

That’s all because they are not obligated to share their resources between people and with a VPS server. Now, does it mean that you will not be able to accomplish outstanding performance with VPS alone?

It definitely doesn’t mean that! On the contrary. You can achieve it even under huge traffic loads. There are a plethora of VPS providers on the market that are offering excellent plans that can easily match even the best-dedicated servers.

What is VPS Hosting? How Does it Work?

As you can see, both of these alternatives are great. What you’re going to choose highly depends on your needs. If you need absolute power, then opt for a dedicated server. On the other hand, if you’re not that demanding, yet you’re looking for something that’s affordable then VPS should be your choice!
