Sustainable waste management startup Roadrunner has raised $70 million in a Series D funding round backed by General Atlantic.
Founded in 2014 by CEO Graham Rihn, the Pittsburgh-based startup serves thousands of businesses across the US, using its platform to boost recycling rates.
The recycling industry in the US has been described as a “mess,” and Roadrunner is working to improve the situation. By streamlining multiple clients’ recyclable waste, the firm is hoping to help businesses reduce costs, and help the environment.
In its pitch to investors, Roadrunner claims that waste management is inefficient in part thanks to the fact the sector is dominated by five companies, such as $65 billion market leader Waste Management Inc. Roadrunner says these firms don’t prioritize recycling.
Roadrunner wants to help businesses reduce costs, offering recycling plans, measuring their waste output on a month-by-month basis, providing tailored waste receptacles, and a paying businesses back a percentage of the costs saved.
“Oftentimes, waste – and the mismanagement of it – can be an issue that flies under the radar for companies,” said CEO Rihn in a statement. “We’re here to show folks there is a better, more efficient way to manage materials and divert waste from landfills while keeping the planet, and your business, top of mind.”
