What You Should Know About CNC Prototyping
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

CNC prototyping is the use of a CNC machine to make prototype parts. These parts are used in functional testing or fundraising in the market.

CNC prototyping is ideal for part testing and molding prototypes. However, 3D printing is considered the most common technique. It is known for its versatility and precision. CNC prototyping also has a vast range of materials you can choose from.

It is possible to add coil inserts and keys as extra features. The 5 axis machine is complex and can handle almost all geometries. CNC prototyping entails a lot of things, and this article aims to discuss it.

CNC Prototyping Procedure

Below are some factors that determine CNC prototyping;

  • The material in use– plastics like ABS are cheaper than stainless steel. However, there are cheap metals like aluminum that can be used when prototyping.
  • Size of the prototype– it is advisable to pick the correct block size to make full use of the machine
  • Complexity- complex parts with intricated extras mean the CNC machine will take longer. You will also need improved machines, thus increasing the price.
  • Accuracy- a tighter tolerance means the prototyping job will be more expensive. An improved precision also takes a long time to complete.

Types of Machines Used When Prototyping

Below are some common machines used when prototyping;

  • CNC Milling Prototyping

You might need a 6 axis CNC machine, but this depends on the prototype’s complexity. This machine has extra axes that improve its movement, thus making it more precise. However, it costs more than standard machines. Professional 3D printing services are expensive but have an excellent result.

CNC milling entails extracting the end prototype from a huge block of sheets with the help of a head cut tool. These mills are used because they are accurate and entail a collection of geometries.

Milling prototyping is the ideal all-purpose solution to these procedures.

  • CNC Turning Prototyping

Lathes are used for prototyping parts with mid-round sections but a limited application.

Robust laser cutters for small enterprises can cut plastics and metals like aluminum. These machines are versatile. This makes them more preferred in small studios.

However, these machines have laser heat that might leave marks on the prototype.

CNC routers have the same function as CNC mills, but they are cheaper. They are designed using a gantry design for full effect. These machines are ideal for small enterprises that do not want complex metal cutting.

These machines use three axes, giving you value for your money. However, they are not as accurate as other CNC mills.

Why Should You Use a CNC Machine?

Below are some reasons why you should use a CNC machine;

It is possible to move these machines on all axis’, and this makes them flexible. These machines also create 3D prototypes with the help of CAD software. CAD data is turned into numerical data to make a replica of the design.

  • They Have Little or No Wastage

CNC machining makes the best 3D component by the use of materials like plastic and wood. This feature ensures the least wastage that flows immediately via the bottom line. It is also possible to use the production system with any material to increase speed.

Material wastage has a huge role in profitability, but there is no wastage in CNC systems.

Even employees in the safest working places are exposed to threats when working. CNC machinery process is fully automated, and you do not have to be close to it as the operator.

This means the work environment will be safer, and employees will hop on more than one task.

  • They Create Many Components

You can convert CAD data to use it with a CNC machine and save it for later. You can build a library of components fast with the use of a CNC system. This, in turn, creates multi-skilled employees.

The CNC machine is priceless in the business world. This is because you can flip between several components.

  • They Have Many Applications

A CNC machine can convert CAD data to make 3D components, meaning you can use it for many applications. The CNC process is used in different markets and has a positive result.

CNC machines work at a better speed, and this gives them an advantage over others.

Limitations of CNC Machines

Just like there are two sides to a coin, CNC machines also have their limitations. Below we discuss a few;

PLA filaments have a starting price of $30 per kilo, and you can print them on 3D printers that range from $300. The CNC metal is more expensive.

Final Thoughts

CAD software has revolutionized most industrial sectors due to its versatility. With the above information, you are now familiar with CNC machining. Depending on your project, you might need professional 3D printing services to get the job done.
