“TRT 12 Punto,” organized by TRT for the fifth time this year to breathe new life into the cinema industry, came to an end with an award ceremony. Speaking at the ceremony, Mehmet Zahid Sobaci, Director General of TRT, said, “If we need to emphasize once again the importance we attach to cinema as Turkiye’s public broadcaster, we are delighted to support the industry strongly and to sign box office records by filling the cinema halls with our co-productions.”
“TRT 12 Punto,” a screenplay development and co-production platform held in three separate platforms with the participation of 22 different countries from July 16th to 23rd this year, concluded with an award ceremony broadcast live on TRT 2. Mehmet Zahid Sobaci, Director General of TRT and important figures from Turkish and world cinema attended the award ceremony.
“Young talents can connect with leading figures from Turkish and world cinema at 12 Punto”
Mehmet Zahid Sobaci, Director General of TRT emphasized that 12 Punto is a platform encompassing everything related to cinema, embracing all stakeholders in the process, drawing from the richness of co-production, and most importantly, standing out with its originality. He stated, “Through 12 Punto, we provide opportunities for innovations in the cultural field on national and international levels. We make it possible for young talents and fresh ideas to access guidance from leading figures in Turkish and world cinema. In addition to enriching the future of cinema by introducing new names and strong works to the industry, we contribute to an environment dominated by diversity rather than following similar patterns.”
Sobaci announced that a new dimension was added to 12 Punto this year, saying, “Thanks to this new process, four TRT co-produced films, whose shooting has been completed and have entered the editing phase, met with the selection committees of Cannes, Venice, Sundance, Locarno, and Rotterdam festivals. Screenings of twenty-minute edits of our films were conducted. I hope that in the coming years, we will have the opportunity to see these films at major festivals. This year, more than 100 feature-length and nearly 400 short films applied to 12 Punto. I thank all participants for their efforts and wish them success in their cinematic journeys.”
“TRT co-productions have won 236 awards at festivals in the last three years”
Stressing the significance of the support they provide to cinema as Turkiye’s public broadcaster, Sobaci said, “We are delighted to support the industry strongly and to sign box office records by filling the cinema halls with our joint productions in Turkiye. Our presence and achievements in national and international festivals are increasing day by day. After festival and cinema screenings, TRT co-produced films are also broadcast on Turkiye’s international digital platform, ‘tabii,’ reaching a very large audience. Indeed, tabii has become a family of 2 million people within its 2 months of existence. We will continue to increase our efforts and continue to support cinema in all its aspects and stages.”
Sobaci mentioned that they hosted very important guests from the Balkan region this year and said, “The heads of film centers from Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, and Slovenia were here both to meet our finalist projects and to present the funding opportunities in their own countries. I thank them very much, and I believe that we will see more Turkish-Balkan co-production projects in the coming years.”
