Netflix has become a powerhouse of original content, releasing a steady stream of movies that attract viewers from all over the world. However, not all Netflix originals receive universal acclaim. Some movies that critics pan end up resonating deeply with audiences, gaining cult followings and high viewer ratings. Here are ten Netflix original movies that critics hate but audiences love.

Critic Score: 27%. Audience Score: 83%. Set in an alternate reality where humans coexist with magical creatures, “Bright” was heavily criticized for its messy plot and lackluster execution. However, its unique concept and action-packed scenes captivated a large audience, making it one of Netflix’s most-watched original films.

Secret Obsession (2019)

Critic Score: 29%. Audience Score: 40%. “Secret Obsession” is a psychological thriller that received harsh reviews for its clichéd narrative and predictability. Despite this, viewers found the suspense and drama engaging, turning it into a popular watch for fans of the genre.

The Do-Over (2016)

Critic Score: 9%. Audience Score: 43%. Starring Adam Sandler and David Spade, this comedy about two friends faking their deaths to start anew was panned by critics. Yet, the comedic duo’s chemistry and over-the-top antics found a receptive audience, especially among Sandler’s loyal fanbase.

Tall Girl (2019)

Critic Score: 44%. Audience Score: 53%. “Tall Girl” tells the story of a 16-year-old who struggles with her height in a world where she feels she doesn’t fit in. Critics found it clichéd and uninspired, but many viewers appreciated its heartfelt message about self-acceptance.

The Cloverfield Paradox (2018)

Critic Score: 21%. Audience Score: 44%. This sci-fi thriller, part of the Cloverfield franchise, was lambasted for its convoluted plot and lack of coherence. Nonetheless, fans of the series enjoyed its connections to the larger Cloverfield universe and its unexpected release.

365 Days (2020)

Critic Score: 0%. Audience Score: 29%. A steamy romantic drama that critics blasted for its problematic themes and poor script, “365 Days” nevertheless garnered a massive following. Viewers were drawn to its provocative content and dramatic love story, sparking much discussion online.

The Ridiculous 6 (2015)

Critic Score: 0%. Audience Score: 34%. Another Adam Sandler comedy, “The Ridiculous 6” was panned for its offensive humor and lack of originality. Despite the backlash, it found an audience that appreciated its slapstick comedy and irreverent take on the Western genre.

Death Note (2017)

Critic Score: 36%. Audience Score: 23%. An adaptation of the popular manga and anime, “Death Note” was criticized for its deviations from the source material and uneven pacing. However, some viewers, especially those unfamiliar with the original, enjoyed its dark and thrilling narrative.

Polar (2019)

Critic Score: 19%. Audience Score: 52%. “Polar,” based on a graphic novel, is a violent action film that critics found excessively brutal and lacking in substance. Yet, its stylish action sequences and the performance by Mads Mikkelsen won over many viewers looking for a gritty, no-holds-barred movie.

These ten Netflix original movies highlight the often stark divide between critical and audience reception. While critics focus on narrative coherence, originality, and execution, audiences sometimes prioritize entertainment value, star power, and genre appeal. Whether you love them or hate them, these films demonstrate that viewer tastes are incredibly diverse, and there’s something on Netflix for everyone.
