Spartan Radar, a developer of sensor technology for automated vehicles, raised $15 million in a Series A funding round led by Prime Movers Lab.

The Los Alamitos, Calif.-based startup will use the funds to ramp up hiring and further commercialize its safety technology, the company said in a Nov. 3 announcement.

Spartan, which also raised $10 million in seed round funding earlier this year, is developing software designed to improve the performance of existing radar systems to support the safe deployment of advanced driver-assistance systems and automating driving technologies, including on commercial trucks.

“After billions of dollars in investments and several AV companies going public, the industry is finally ready to move beyond R&D to commercialize at scale in defined use-cases like last-mile delivery, trucking and robo-taxi,” Spartan Radar founder and CEO Nathan Mintz said in the announcement. “OEMs and AV developers need safe, robust sensor solutions that are ready to go to market next year and we’re prepared to meet that need.”

The company said its Biomimetic Radar mimics human perception processes to enhance focus and context, while speeding up processing and reducing false detections.

The software is almost entirely hardware agnostic and can be deployed on existing radar systems, the company said. — Transport Topics
