A crypto mining company founded in Dallas in July has already raised a total of $50 million in funding, benefitting from record levels of cash pouring into the space.
Blockmetrix, founded by three North Texas investment leaders, announced the closing of a $43 million funding round on Tuesday. The money will be used to secure 5,000 or more mining rigs. Its earlier $7 million funding round helped it deploy an initial batch of over 1,000 rigs.
“Our corporate ethos is to have a great sense of urgency and speed to market,” said David Kiger, co-founder and company manager at Blockmetrix. Kiger is the founder and a shareholder of Worldwide Express, a $4 billion U.S.-based shipping and logistics firm.
Investors in Blockmetrix’s latest capital raise are from the U.S., Australia and several countries in Asia, the company said.
There has been a rush from investors to hop on the crypto wagon, with digital currency and blockchain startups raising a record $25 billion in 2021, up significantly from $3 billion in 2020, according to CB Insights data. Investor interest peaked in 2021 after a stunning Bitcoin rally, which dropped off at the end of 2021.
The Blockmetrix founders say there is a crypto mining gold rush happening in Texas due to support from Gov. Greg Abbott and the Texas Blockchain Council, as well as the state’s historically low energy costs.
In June, Abbott signed the “Virtual Currency Bill,” recognizing the legal status of virtual currencies. The same month, the Texas Department of Banking clarified that Texas law allows state-chartered banks to provide custody, or safekeeping, services for virtual currencies.
Blockmetrix’s team of five, including the three founders, all live in Dallas. The company’s office is in the Rolex building in the Harwood District.
“Being in Dallas has been a big selling point for investors because they know that it’s becoming the mining epicenter of the U.S.,” said Nevin Bannister, co-founder and CEO of Blockmetrix. Bannister has founded startups that have sold for over $800 million combined.
The majority of Blockmetrix’s mining rigs are in Oklahoma but the company plans to move them to Texas. China’s move to tighten regulations on crypto mining and trading last summer created a mad scramble to find facilities in the U.S. to host equipment, Kiger said.
“Right now, we’re putting mining equipment wherever we can find space to do so,” Kiger said.
The founders plan to take the company public, with timing depending on market conditions, Kiger said.
