Ian Hathaway, an investor, startup adviser, data scientist and writer with expertise in tech startups, entrepreneurship and venture capital, will share his insight and present “The Startup Community Way” at 10 to 11 a.m., Dec. 10 at Howard L. Hawks Hall, Room 020.

Those interested in attending the free and public event can register at here.

“We are excited about Ian coming to Nebraska to share his expertise and experience related to building healthy startup ecosystems. It’s always helpful to hear from an expert as to the role we can each play to help make our Nebraska ecosystem stronger,” said Kathy Farrell, James Jr., and Susan Stuart Endowed Dean of the College of Business.

Hathaway currently leads investment analytics at Techstars, in support of the firm’s capital formation, fund management and investment strategy globally. A senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, he also serves as a board member and senior fellow at the Center for American Entrepreneurship.

Previously, he built and led the global ecosystems business at Techstars, which helps entrepreneurs and civic leaders around the world create more supportive startup communities. He also served as an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank and World Trade Organization, and as an adjunct professor at New York University.

A graduate of the University of Chicago, he led innovation initiatives at Bloomberg, Silicon Valley Bank and Frontier Economics, worked with Silicon Valley venture-backed startups, founded and sold an advisory firm. He also advised organizations in the technology and media, startup and venture capital, financial and professional services, and non-profit nonprofit and public policy sectors on a range of strategic, innovation and analytical matters.

“Whether you are a current business owner, faculty or staff member, student or startup hopeful, Ian can share information that helps us all make an impact. I hope everyone gets a chance to listen to Ian while he’s here. Hopefully, he’s just the first of notable people we can attract to our state to help us strengthen our startup ecosystem,” said Joe Petsick, executive in residence and assistant professor of practice in management, who helped arrange Hathaway’s visit.

Regularly cited in The New York Times, The Economist and Financial Times, Hathaway also contributes to Harvard Business Review and The Wall Street Journal.
Those who register to attend Hathaway’s presentation on December 10 have the opportunity to win a copy of the book he co-authored, “The Startup Community Way,” about entrepreneurial ecosystems.
