  • Businesses have scrambled to update their digital operations in the pandemic, creating an opportunity for UX startups.

Uniform, a startup that helps companies customize their digital user experience, announced a $28 million Series A funding round.

The round was led by New York venture capital and private equity firm Insight Partners, whose past investments include Twitter, Shopify, and Wix. VC firm Array Ventures and Elad Gil, entrepreneur and former Google and Twitter executive, also contributed to the round.

Uniform’s software lets UX experts create their own tech stacks by combining features from vendors like Salesforce, Google, and Amazon Web Services.

These tech giants are known for selling suites of software tools that do everything from web design and content management to ecommerce and payment processing. Since these tools come as a package, it’s hard to customize them, said Uniform CEO Lars Petersen. Uniform wants to streamline the process of creating custom tech stacks, he said.

Insight Partners managing director Teddie Wardi said investors were attracted to Uniform because it’s offering a new service in a red-hot space. The pandemic forced companies of all sizes to quickly update their ecommerce operations as more shopping moved online.

Petersen said Uniform took advantage of this need to win clients like Cirque Du Soleil and Trimble through direct sales and partnerships with companies such as CMS platform Contentful, IT provider Kin + Carta, and digital design agency AKQA.

Uniform raised $2 million in a 2020 seed round but has focused on building its product until now, said Petersen. It plans to use the new money to hire more engineers and salespeople, sign more tech vendors and agencies, and market its products, he said.
