3 ways to improve your website security

Every so often, you hear in the news that a company’s website was down temporarily for several hours, preventing visitors and consumers alike from accessing it. Or, you may receive unscrupulous-looking emails from family or friends who otherwise normally wouldn’t send such messages.

Why do these events happen? For the most part, it’s because websites were intruded upon with malware. Improving the security of your business or personal website is important — but it’s not as complicated as you might think.

Taking the time to learn the ins and outs of improving the security and privacy of your website will not only help you become more knowledgeable about different safeguards but will also provide you with greater peace of mind.

Here are three valuable tips for operating your devices, software, and systems efficiently and securely to prevent malware intrusion on your website.

1. Firewalls

If you’re looking for ways to filter traffic and block intruders from gaining unauthorized access to private data on your website, then installing a firewall is your best line of defense. Many new operating systems already employ this technology, and you may already have one available and turned on, but it would behoove you to verify it.

In particular, firewalls thwart cyber threats and block them from infiltrating your website. This is achieved through around-the-clock surveillance that monitors any attempts to gain access to your operating system.

In addition, there are web application firewalls (WAF) that can protect a specific website from malware intrusion and advanced cyber threats. This type of firewall protects your website server from any threats coming from the router or data connection.

2. Antivirus Software

Antivirus software Antivirus software often serves as a second line of defense if any malware were to slip past your firewall. The antivirus software will continually scan your operating system or websites for cyber threat anomalies and will alert you when issues are found.

Not only should your antivirus software be updated regularly but any software or plugins that you’re using on your device should also be up to date as well. Updates usually include security enhancements and vulnerability patches that will defend against malware.

3. Malware Removal

If an intrusion has occurred on your website, the removal of malware should be done immediately. Of course, when using a malware removal tool, be sure not to log into any sensitive accounts, as the existing malware can capture your login credentials. Here are some additional steps you can take to help remove malware from your website:

  • Disconnect the device from the internet
  • Enter safe mode by performing the steps for the operating system in use
  • Check the operating system’s activity monitor for malicious applications
  • Perform a scan with a malware scanner and removal tool
  • Adjust your web browser settings, as needed
  • Clear your cache and cookies

Note: Performing these steps can vary depending on which operating system you use.

Investing in Security Solutions is a No-Brainer to Protect Your Website

Now that you’re more knowledgeable and aware of how to improve the security and privacy of your website conveniently and quickly, these and other tips will help safeguard your overall operating system from intrusion and give you greater peace of mind. Indeed, investing a bit of time and energy to ensure your website remains secure and private is well worth it in the long run.
