At just 19, Kisum Chan’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to co-found Rice Inc., an agriculture technology startup that would challenge the status quo and capture global leaders’ attention. From the halls of his university to the frontlines of agricultural transformation, his journey is proof of how youthful ambition and the promise of technology can reshape traditional agriculture.
Planting the Seed of Change
Starting as a student, Chan already recognized the challenges smallholder farmers face in Southeast Asia. Considered the backbone of the region’s agricultural economy, these farmers often struggled with post-harvest losses due to inadequate drying facilities. Chan saw an opportunity to make a difference.
“We saw a problem that was overlooked, a gap that needed bridging,” Chan recalls. “It was about giving the tools back to the people who feed us. I realized that leveraging technology could empower these farmers and revolutionize how rice is processed.”
Chan’s startup offers a much-needed solution to the AgTech sector. With the global market projected to experience a 19% annual growth rate from 2020 to 2025, Chan’s venture is well-positioned to ride this wave of growth.
Empowering Farmers, One Dryer at a Time
Chan and his co-founders set out to develop a proprietary small-scale rice dryer that would enable farmers to reduce post-harvest waste by an impressive 30%. They aimed to disrupt traditional supply chains and improve the livelihoods of countless farmers by decentralizing rice processing and bringing affordable drying technology to the farm level.
Their innovative solution quickly gained traction, attracting the attention of influential figures like Bill Clinton and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In a remarkable achievement, Chan’s startup secured $1 million in funding from the prestigious Hult Prize, awarded by Clinton himself.
“Gaining recognition and support from influential individuals and organizations marked a turning point for our startup,” Chan reflects. “It fueled our determination to make a lasting impact.“
Leaving a Lasting Legacy
Chan remains committed to pushing the boundaries in the agriculture technology space. “We’re just scratching the surface of what’s possible,” he says with a smile. “There’s so much more we can do to harness the power of technology and positively impact the world.“
For him, success is measured financially and in the lives transformed. “Our goal has always been to make technology accessible and empower smallholder farmers,” he emphasizes. “We’re improving their livelihoods and contributing to food security and sustainable agriculture practices.”
