NEW DELHI: The Betel Leaf Co (TBLC), a Bengaluru-based dark kitchen, has raised $800k in the seed funding round led by Venture Catalysts and 9 Unicorns. Other co-investors included Amit Mehta (Promoter of S Amit group of Companies), Arjun Vaidya (Venture Investor Verlininvest), and Masoom Minawala (Global Brand Influencer & Angel Investor).

The company aims to utilize the funds to expand its footprint in India and overseas to build a sustainable supply chain with a standardized product and build 150 dark kitchens in next 24 months.

Started by Prem and Payal Raheja, the paan retailer served PAN-India amidst the pandemic in the last two years. The Betel Leaf has sold nearly a million paans and catered over 250 weddings, social gatherings, and parties over the last 28 months. Rahejas want to build the world’s first D2C paan company that can be enjoyed at the comfort of your home.

In a statement, Apoorva Ranjan Sharma, President and Co-founder, Venture Catalysts and 9 Unicorns said, “They say history repeats itself. Over the years, we have kept drifting away from our roots and our culture. At Venture Catalysts, we’ve always recognized the efforts to rejuvenate Indian culture and heritage through a commercial opportunity. The Betel Leaf Co has manifested itself as the catalyst in the renaissance of the art of paan making.”

“Catching technology with tradition, keeping in mind the true taste of the paan. We make all our paans with a tried and tested recipe to ensure it tastes the same every time. All our paans are tobacco free and suitable for all ages,” said Prem Raheja, in a statement.

TBLC’s paan comes packed in a three-layered pouch, which is accommodated in boxes. It is preservative-free and the condiment remain fresh for up to 48 hours without refrigeration and 120 hours when frozen, according to the company. The paan retail company offers 45 flavors like tiramisu, cognac, coffeee and Magai meetha. The paans are made using Calcutta leaf and Magai leaf.
