Ryan Brings Nearly 20 years of Beverage Industry Experience to BOXT, a first-of-its-kind luxury boxed wine brand on a mission to become America’s favorite house wine.
Austin, TX (October 18, 2021) – BOXT, the female-founded, direct-to-consumer winery, announces Steve Ryan as their newly appointed Chief Operating Officer. Ryan brings nearly a decade of experience in the wine industry, from marketing internships to executive winery operations, and will provide veteran winemaking expertise to BOXT as it expands, entering its second year.
Ryan looks forward to tackling the challenges that joining the table at BOXT will bring. Focused on taste profiles rather than varietals or growing regions, BOXT’s winemaking process is quite different from the practices Ryan is accustomed to, although it has deep roots in the respected, age-old industry that birthed it.
Ryan worked with BOXT in the beginning to perfect their winemaking process, and quickly realized he had to be a part of the venture directly. “I’m most looking forward to sourcing wine from different regions of the world and consistently delivering on our promise of a taste our members know they’re going to love every single time,” he says of his new role.
“From the moment I met Steve in early 2020, even with his skepticism, I knew he was someone I had to work with. After we hit our first year milestone, it was incredibly validating to have him believe so much that he simply had to join the team,” said Sarah Puil, Founder and CEO of BOXT. “Having been a part of so much of our start from before we were even making wine, much less shipping it, there was no doubt having him on the inside was going to help catapult us into the next phase of our growth.”
After obtaining a degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from UC Berkeley, Ryan’s passions shifted from medicine to brewing; he would soon earn a graduate degree in Fermentation from UC Davis and become Head Brewer at Gordon Biersch brewing company in Northern California. From there, the transition to wine was an easy one. While running operations at Gordon Biersch, one of Ryan’s responsibilities was to build up the brewery’s wine list — a task that led him to sample over 2,000 wines in one year.
“I was having a lot of fun with it,” he says. “I developed my palate for wine during that time, so then I just made the leap — with Napa just up the road, the vines were calling me.”
