Dozens of young girls gathered in Orlando to get inspired and learn more about robotics and science at the FemSTEM Robotics event in November. The program, hosted by Tech Sassy Girlz (TSG), celebrates the curiosity girls have in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and enables this next generation of innovators and inventors.
Orange County Government was one of the event’s sponsors and provided Orange County’s Chief Innovation & Emerging Technology Officer, Andrea Wesser-Brawner, as the keynote speaker.
“We’re proud of the important, inspiring role Tech Sassy Girlz and our other informal STEM learning program grantees play in our community — inspiring the next generation of local innovators and problem solvers,” said Wesser-Brawner. “The students who access these programs will be the future architects and caretakers of Mayor Demings’ vision of our County becoming the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow.”
The girls participated in programming, wiring and 3D printing activities. They also learned more about robotics and STEM-related fields, meeting with women leaders from the Central Florida community with exciting careers in technology. It was a great opportunity to expose them to the different STEM careers they can pursue and what it takes to get there.
With community support programs such as Tech Sassy Girlz (TSG), programming and outreach goes a long way to ensuring the development of the next generation of STEM-savvy leaders. TSG was founded in 2012 and has touched the lives of more than 2,000 middle and high school “girlz” and has awarded more than $20,000 in scholarships.
