Hyundai unveils new robot for your home

Soon a personal robot could be at your beck and call to carry groceries, haul package deliveries and even take a baby for a walk, as car maker Hyundai revealed the company’s first small mobility platform using robotic technologies.

Called the Mobile Eccentric Droid (MobED), Hyundai created a high-tech platform that can maneuver around all sorts of environments and move up to 18 miles per hour, about the speed of an average electric scooter. The MobED is 26 inches long and 23 inches wide in the shape of a rectangle and weighs about 110 pounds.

The platform is attached to four large wheels that have independent suspensions, giving it stability even if it’s on an incline or uneven roads. The wheels are also equipped with ‘Eccentric Wheel’ drive which gives them steering, braking and altitude control systems indoors or outdoors.

In a video promoting MobED, the wheeled platform can be seen balancing a pyramid of wine glasses, not spilling a drop, while also carrying packages for a delivery man and walking a baby stroller.

The purposes of MobED can be endless, as Hyundai describes it, “limitless movement, infinite possibilities.”

In a press release, Hyundai said the company expects MobED’s wheel adjustability, compact body size and low vibration capabilities to make it an optimal solution for delivery and for guiding and filming equipment. They also noted that MobED can be used as a mobility device for the elderly or the disabled eventually, when Hyundai expands capabilities to allow people to be mounted.

“We have developed the MobED platform to overcome the limitations of existing indoor guide and service robots while maximizing its usability in cities by dramatically improving the platform’s overall mobility,” said Dong Jin Hyun, head of Hyundai Motor Group Robotics Lab.

The development of MobED comes shortly after Hyundai acquired Boston Dynamics in June 2021, a robotics company that was created as a spinoff from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Hyundai is expected to debut MobED at CES in January 2022, a global tech industry conference being held in Las Vegas.
