WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Purdue University’s competitive robotics team, Purdue SIGBots, swept their last tournament. Now, they’re ready to take on the world.
Purdue SIGBots will be competing at the world championships in Dallas this May.
Their robots are designed to play, and hopefully win, a new game every year. This is the result of a lot of hard work.
“We all do this because its our passion. It’s what we love to do, and sometimes we’ve got to pay out of our own pocket to make competitions happen. Sometimes we’ve got to stay n the lab until 2 or 3 a.m. to make the robot work before a competition but we do it because we love it,” said Micah Rassi.
Micah Rassi is the President of Purdue SIGBots, and she is proud of his team for their recent win at the VEX U Qualifier hosted at Purdue. This is the largest competition outside of the world championship; and is feeling confident that they’re ready to take on the rest of the world.
“A lot of the stuff that we’re doing here in robotics has made me better outside of robotics,” said Rassi.
“Without the fun, I probably would not be doing this,” said Will Xu, the club’s outreach coordinator.
Xu also said that SIGBots is about more than just playing to win. The team distributes their operating system to about five thousand other users. That includes high school teams they mentor and their competitors.
“You know, we’re not just your average robotics team that tries to compete solely for the sake of competition. We also try to do really cool things here. Partially because is fun, but partially because we do want to give to the community,” explained Xu.
The club members are now improving their designs.
We’ll have to stay updated with how they fare in the worldwide competition.
