“In architectural lighting, the integration of technology and human-centric design enhances how we experience and interact with our spaces,” states Xingying Peng, a visionary lighting designer at The Lighting Practice. Her work, featuring the shift toward sustainable and intelligent environments, leads a transformative moment in the architectural lighting industry.

Traditional workplace lighting design has been detached from end users. Although highly functional, workplace lighting is not always aesthetically pleasing or intuitive to control, and it rarely has the users’ well-being in mind. Peng’s approach, which blends the latest technological advancements with awareness of human needs, positions her at the forefront of an industry-wide transformation.

Illuminating the Future of Workspaces

The architectural lighting industry is significantly changing, particularly within the corporate and healthcare sectors. Recent statistics reveal a marked increase in the adoption of smart lighting solutions, driven by a growing recognition of their impact on productivity, well-being, and energy efficiency. Forecasts predict that by 2030, most new constructions will incorporate intelligent lighting systems as standard features, highlighting a broader trend toward automation and sustainability.

Peng was among the first to drive this change in design: “We design lighting that’s completely integrated – it should reflect the identity of our clients and enhance the daily experiences of the people who occupy these spaces.” Her designs often incorporate adaptive lighting systems that adjust to natural light levels, user preferences, and even the time of day, promoting a harmonious balance between artificial and natural light.

Showcasing Innovation in Lighting Design

Xingying Peng’s portfolio includes several notable projects that have garnered attention for their innovative use of lighting. Her work at the Citizens Bank Flagship Financial Center in Philadelphia won the 2022 Illumination Award in the Philadelphia and National chapters. Her work on CRISPR Therapeutics R&D Headquarters won the 2023 LIT award, an international award that celebrates creativity and innovation in the field of lighting design.

The Citizens Bank project, for instance, seamlessly integrates lighting with architecture to create a welcoming and energy-efficient space that features the bank’s brand identity. Similarly, the CRISPR Therapeutics R&D Headquarters project leveraged lighting to enhance the facility’s cutting-edge research environment, emphasizing both the scientific mission and the well-being of its occupants.

Designing for Well-being: The Impact of Light

Peng’s focus on lighting’s impact on health and well-being is particularly compelling. Drawing on her research and practical experience, she designs lighting systems that support circadian rhythms, reduce eye strain, and create environments conducive to focus and relaxation. “Lighting is a powerful factor in shaping our physical and psychological environments,” Peng notes. “By considering its effects on health, we can create spaces that look good and feel good too.”

This approach has gained relevance during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has brought attention to the importance of healthy workplaces. Peng’s designs offer a blueprint for future workplaces, where lighting is crucial in promoting wellness and productivity.

Composing the Bright Future of Architectural Lighting

Furthermore, Peng is optimistic about the potential for innovation in smart lighting and sustainable design. “The future of architectural lighting is bright, with endless possibilities for creativity and impact,” she reflects. “Our challenge and opportunity lie in continuing to push the boundaries of what’s possible, using light to enhance our world.”

As the industry adapts to sustainability, well-being, and technological integration, many are following Xingying Peng’s footsteps and rethinking workplace lighting design. Her leadership in innovative, human-centric design illuminates spaces and the industry’s path forward, highlighting the impactful power of light in shaping one’s experiences and environments.
