In the wake of the devastating Hurricane Helene, which has claimed over 200 lives and left a trail of destruction across six states, the REALTOR Relief Foundation (RRF) is stepping up to provide much-needed assistance to those affected by the storm. According to the National Association of REALTORS (NAR), which oversees the RRF, the foundation has already distributed more than $33 million in disaster relief since its creation in 2001.
The RRF, a charitable organization dedicated to helping communities recover from disasters, is offering $1,000 in aid to eligible victims of Hurricane Helene. Victims of the disaster who live in Tennessee must live in the following counties; Johnson, Unicoi, Cocke, Hawkins, Washington, Greene, Grainger, Hamblen, Carter, and Hawkins.
How to Donate to the RRF
To support the RRF’s efforts in providing relief to Hurricane Helene victims, individuals can donate by texting “HeleneRelief24” to 71777 or visiting the RRF’s website. Through October 11th, all donations made via this method will go directly to those affected by the hurricane. The RRF states that every contribution, no matter the size, can make a vital difference in the lives of those struggling to recover from the storm – and further advises interested parties to tag their donations for Hurricane Helene.
To further support the operations of the RRF, the National Association of REALTORS intends to cover all administrative costs associated with the foundation. This means that 100% of the donations made to the RRF go directly to disaster victims, making sure that the funds have the maximum possible impact on the ground.
Local Associations Join the Relief Effort
In addition to the national-level efforts of the RRF, local REALTOR associations are also mobilizing to support their communities in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. In Tennessee alone, five local associations are collecting donations to help those impacted by the storm.
The Tennessee REALTORS, the state’s largest professional trade association, has been coordinating with its local chapters to gather resources and distribute aid to affected areas.
“Our members are deeply connected to the communities they serve,” said Regina Hubbard, the 2024 president of Tennessee REALTORS. “For many of our members, this devastation and damage is in their own backyards, the neighborhoods they grew up in, the churches they attend, the roadways they travel on, these are their communities that need help. As realtors we see our communities and especially other realtors as family, so helping out and giving back is something we’re very passionate about.“
Local associations across the Tennessee, from Memphis to Knoxville, are organizing donation drives collecting essential items such as bottled water, non-perishable food, and cleaning supplies. Then partnering with local charities and relief organizations to ascertain that the donations reach those who need them most.
The Road to Recovery
As the full extent of the damage caused by Hurricane Helene becomes clear, it is evident that the road to recovery will be long and challenging. With over 1 million people still without power and countless homes and businesses destroyed, the need for ongoing support is immeasurable.
The RRF and local REALTOR associations have stated their intention to stand with their communities throughout the recovery process. The RRF encourages individuals to donate what they can and to spread the word about the foundation’s work. Coming together in support of those affected by Hurricane Helene, communities and associations across the Southeast can begin the process of healing and rebuilding.
